Summary

The New York Times Book Review

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

A #1 New York Times Bestseller "With evocative language, a shifting timeline and more than one unreliable narrator, Suma subtly explores the balance of power between the talented and the mediocre, the rich and the poor, the brave and the cowardly 。 。 。 To reveal more would be to uncover the bloody heart that beats beneath the floorboards of this urban-legend-tinged tale。" --The New York Times The Walls Around Us is a ghostly story of suspense told in two voices--one still living and one dead。 On the outside, there's Violet, an eighteen-year-old ballerina days away from the life of her dreams when something threatens to expose the shocking truth of her achievement。 On the inside, within the walls of a girls' juvenile detention center, there's Amber, locked up for so long she can't imagine freedom。 Tying these two worlds together is Orianna, who holds the key to unlocking all the girls' darkest mysteries: What really happened on the night Orianna stepped between Violet and her tormentors? What really happened on two strange nights at Aurora Hills? Will Amber and Violet and Orianna ever get the justice they deserve--in this life or in another one?

This book would have been better had it only been Amber’s story。 I understand what it was trying to do with the dual perspective, and I think it did a good job of making the voices of the two girls sound very different from each other, but I didn’t care about Violet or her storyline。 Sometimes I like reading about unlikable characters, but they have to be unlikable in an interesting way, and Violet just wasn’t。 The book probably wouldn’t have worked completely without her perspective, but I wish This book would have been better had it only been Amber’s story。 I understand what it was trying to do with the dual perspective, and I think it did a good job of making the voices of the two girls sound very different from each other, but I didn’t care about Violet or her storyline。 Sometimes I like reading about unlikable characters, but they have to be unlikable in an interesting way, and Violet just wasn’t。 The book probably wouldn’t have worked completely without her perspective, but I wish her point of view had been told in short interludes as opposed to entire chapters。 I loved Amber’s storyline, the writing was beautiful and the book had a lot of good commentary on the justice system。 However, towards the end I felt like something was missing, I can’t pinpoint what exactly it was, but I would have needed a little bit more from this, and I'm sad about it, because this had so much potential。 。。。more

I liked this book a lot。 It was a really good story。 I feel the last 15 pages wasn’t nesassary。 It felt like the main story was over by 290。 But overall a enjoyable enough read。 I did like the writing style in this book。 It kept me interested up until 290。

I would recommend The Walls Around Us to anyone who enjoys books that play with your mind and that has characters who you can empathize with till the very end。 The quality of writing is excellent and it made it difficult to put down。 Personally, I would have liked it better if I wasn’t so confused but, I can’t fault the writing for my own personal preferences。 And it’s always good to try and expand your horizons and book preferences too! I was hesitant to start this book, because I know that I'm not a huge fan of stories that revolve around prisons/detainment, but I gave it a try and。。。 it wasn't for me!I made it about a third of the way through, but I didn't find the characters engaging。 Many of the descriptions and the writing generally seemed overly florid for the circumstances, but I imagine they land differently for a younger reader who is closer to the thought processes and emotional quality of the main characters。Oh well。 I was hesitant to start this book, because I know that I'm not a huge fan of stories that revolve around prisons/detainment, but I gave it a try and。。。 it wasn't for me!I made it about a third of the way through, but I didn't find the characters engaging。 Many of the descriptions and the writing generally seemed overly florid for the circumstances, but I imagine they land differently for a younger reader who is closer to the thought processes and emotional quality of the main characters。Oh well。 。。。more

This was a real trippy book。 I bought this books years ago due to a friend's recommendation (I've previously read two of the author's works, although I unfortunately don't remember them)。 I will say that it took me some time to get into the book, and the last third of the book had a wonderful twist。 The writing style is wonderful, and the plot was disturbing (for all the right reasons, if that ever makes sense)。 Well worth reading。 This was a real trippy book。 I bought this books years ago due to a friend's recommendation (I've previously read two of the author's works, although I unfortunately don't remember them)。 I will say that it took me some time to get into the book, and the last third of the book had a wonderful twist。 The writing style is wonderful, and the plot was disturbing (for all the right reasons, if that ever makes sense)。 Well worth reading。 。。。more

This had a little too much going on--the justice system, friendship, murder, ballet, the supernatural--and thus was skimpy in its treatment of the individual subjects。 Still, it kept me reading。

Well written but found it really confusing, may try again another day

Super captivating and I love the twists and turns and the two perspectives of Violet and Amber。 The suspense was really good and I loved the story。

One of the most gripping, exciting opening scenes I’ve ever read in YA literature。 I dare you to read the first scene and walk away from this book。 The book divides its time between the privileged students of a ballet studio and girls in the harsh Aurora Hills Secure Juvenile Detention Center, with one character bridging the two disparate worlds。 The story of the girls in the Detention Center, especially narrator Amber, are sometimes horrifying, sometimes sad and always compelling。 Author Nova R One of the most gripping, exciting opening scenes I’ve ever read in YA literature。 I dare you to read the first scene and walk away from this book。 The book divides its time between the privileged students of a ballet studio and girls in the harsh Aurora Hills Secure Juvenile Detention Center, with one character bridging the two disparate worlds。 The story of the girls in the Detention Center, especially narrator Amber, are sometimes horrifying, sometimes sad and always compelling。 Author Nova Ren Suma is at her finest in these shocking, ghostly scenes, but some later sections involving bullying in the ballet studio play more like a typical “mean girls” story。 There is a crime and subsequent trial that stresses the advantage of the privileged class, but perhaps relies too heavily on this, ignoring details of the case that could exonerate the accused。 Spoiler alert examples (names withheld): the weapon, potential testimony of the dance teacher about X’s recent erratic behavior, potential testimony of Cody who participated in the bullying, photos on the victims phones (fuzzy or not)。 Despite these reservations, the ending is exciting, chilling and beautifully executed。 。。。more

Aisha Ashworth

Truly the most unique concept I’ve ever come across in a book。 Also Suma’s writing beautiful。

A winding tale of one girl out in the world and one girl locked up。 But they both have someone in common, and her name is Ori。 I struggled a bit with the story of dancers, maybe because I was never one or really interested。 Through the years, Violet and Ori become the best of friends。 But Ori is always the one to succeed while Violet lives in her shadow。 The other girls in dance spend their time picking on Violet, but I think there is more to it than bullying。 Violet can be just mean at times。 T A winding tale of one girl out in the world and one girl locked up。 But they both have someone in common, and her name is Ori。 I struggled a bit with the story of dancers, maybe because I was never one or really interested。 Through the years, Violet and Ori become the best of friends。 But Ori is always the one to succeed while Violet lives in her shadow。 The other girls in dance spend their time picking on Violet, but I think there is more to it than bullying。 Violet can be just mean at times。 Then something happens outside of the dance studio and two of the girls end up dead, and Ori is the one sent away for the crime。Amber, a girl on the inside already is the other voice that tells this story。 This was a bit confusing for me because I really didn't see why were were focusing on her, but it is revealed in the end。 We get a look at what life is like living in juvie and how quickly things can change for all those inside。 The connection is when she has Ori for a cellmate。 But Ori is nothing like the other girls and they can't help but wonder if she is innocent。This is also a supernatural story with a ghost story to be told, but I can't elaborate on that too much without giving it away。 It took me some time to unravel this part of the story。 This was an interesting story with a good plot, I just felt it lagged at times and maybe I needed some of it to be more clear。 。。。more

I was confused when I started reading this because I had no idea what this book was about and didn’t expect such a story。 It was strange and interesting。 I’ve never read anything like this before。

Really enjoyed this spooky and very well-wrought YA set in a girls' juvenile detention center。 It feels like an extended short story in that it executes its twists skillfully but has a certain slightness to it。 That said, it's terrifically creepy, and so much of the overall atmosphere has stayed with me longer than I expected。 It's also like nothing else I've read in YA before (without being a crossover)。 Really enjoyed this spooky and very well-wrought YA set in a girls' juvenile detention center。 It feels like an extended short story in that it executes its twists skillfully but has a certain slightness to it。 That said, it's terrifically creepy, and so much of the overall atmosphere has stayed with me longer than I expected。 It's also like nothing else I've read in YA before (without being a crossover)。 。。。more

Wow! This book has the type of ending where you desperately wished you could forget the ending so that you could reread it for the “first time” and relive those memories of shock, horror, and freedom。
